Join us for our annual quilt show in beautiful Moultrie, GA, September 6 through October 6. This year we’re focusing on small quilts in five different categories (download Fact Sheet for details). While the quilts may be small, the show will be BIG! Lots of variety, lots of quilts, lots of color and texture, everything a quilt show should be. On Saturday, September 29th, we’ll have a special event with demos and light snacks. More details on that to come, but reserve the date on your calendar!

An exhibition of small quilts at the Colquitt County Arts Center, Moultrie, GA September 6 through October 6, 2012 Join us for our annual quilt show in beautiful Moultrie, GA. This year we’re focusing on small quilts in five different categories (described below). While the quilts may be small, the show will be BIG! Lots of variety, lots of quilts, lots of color and texture, everything a quilt show should be. On Saturday, September 29th, we’ll have a special event with demos and light snacks. More details on that to come, but reserve the date on your calendar! Definitions of the five categories: • Miniature is a scaled-down version of a larger quilt. Blocks are 4 inches maximum, the entire quilt 24×24 inches maximum. The key is scale; these are not just small quilts, they are scaled-down. For instance a traditional 12-inch block could be scaled in a 1:4 proportion to finish at 3 inches. Doll quilts often fall into this category. • Placemats & table runners. Placemats are 11 to 12 inches by 15 to 18 inches, table runners are maximum 36 inches square, or 12 to 18 inches by 40 to 72 inches if rectangular. These are meant to be used on a table. • Children’s quilts. These are small quilts designed for an infant or small child, not quilts made by children (although of course they can be). Smallest dimension is 30 inches, largest is 52 inches. They may be rectangular or square. • Lap quilts. These are from 36 to 52 inches wide by 36 to 78 inches long, and may be either square or rectangular. • Wall/art quilts. These are meant to be decorative and hung on a wall like a painting. May be any shape, up to 250 inches total measured edges. Quilts may be for sale, but don’t have to be. Entry fee & prizes: $5 entry fee per quilt. First, second, and third-place ribbons in each of the five categories, plus Best of Show ribbon. Prizes for each of the first-place winners ($50) as well as the Best of Show ($100). Chinese auction of small quilts: Donate a small quilt to be included in the Chinese auction, to benefit the Arts Center, and your entry fee for a regular entry will be waived. (A Chinese auction is where patrons buy tickets and put them in the boxes associated with the quilts they are interested in; at the end of the show, winners are drawn for each quilt.) Donation quilt: “King Me” is an award-winning wall quilt by fiber artist McKenna Linn; proceeds benefit the Arts Center. Tickets available at the Arts Center, from Moultrie Quilt Guild members and CCAC board members, and from participating retailers.

TIFTON — The public and surrounding counties are invited to enjoy a night filled with country/southern rock music at the first Dogwood Music Festival 2012 Saturday at Spence Field, site of the Sunbelt Agriculture Exposition, located at 290-G Harper Boulevard, off of Highway 133, in Moultrie. The Colquitt County Arts Center is hosting this indoor event.

The gates will open at 4 p.m., doors open at 5 p.m. and the concert will start at 6 p.m. Also, the City of Moultrie will host its annual Spring Fling with a free concert on the square today and family-oriented activities Saturday.

Local attorney Patrick Kunes, who has headed up several fundraisers for the Tift Theatre, is serving as the production manager for the festival, along with help from Dr. James Huffman and Attorney Hayden Willis.

“We’re handling more of the people aspect and the Arts Center is handling the sponsorship,” Kunes said. “It’s a joint effort to get things done.”

According to the Arts Center’s press release, Alex Malone is the liaison from the board of directors; Jane Simpson wrote the original grant that got the ball rolling and is responsible for the budget; Lin Sheffield is responsible for contracts, marketing and promotion, ticketing, and website and print design; Beth Jeter is heading up hospitality for bands and sponsors; Mary Ann Robinson is the fiscal agent; McKenna Linn designed the logo; and Jeff Ophime is the director of the Arts Center.

The Arts Center explained that the Dogwood Music Festival of Moultrie was sparked by Mattco Realty’s commitment to distributing dogwood seedlings free to residents every year. In addition to Mattco Realty, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, the Georgia Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Colquitt County Arts Center and the Colquitt County Chamber of Commerce were all involved in the initial planning and financing.

They stated in the press release, “But local excitement for the possibilities of the event caused it to bloom far beyond the original concept. The Dogwood Music Festival is now envisioned as an annual event that will bring notable musical groups and types of music to the Plantation Trace Corridor of southwest Georgia, and is expected to draw visitors from Tifton, Valdosta, Tallahassee, Albany and beyond.”

Kunes said several meetings have been held to discuss the festival and there has been plenty of emailing between all involved.

“It’s time consuming, but as the event draws closer, it becomes a life of its own,” he stated. “The event will go until about 1 a.m. It’s going to be a full day — like a marathon. It’s a lot bigger than any event I’ve done here (Tifton).”

Kunes noted that he’s mostly helping to get everything set up for the bands performing at the festival.

The headline act will be southern rock, jam band Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ of Atlanta with front man Kevn Kinney. Other featured bands will include King Cotton of Tallahassee, Fla. and Yankee Slickers of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. Kunes said King Cotton is an old southern blues, rock band, and Yankee Slickers is a southern rock, jam band. Also, country rock band Kinchafoonee Cowboys, with some members formerly of Albany, will perform.

“It’s a local southwest Georgia thing,” Kunes said about the performers. “We tried to get people from around here.”

They’re expecting over 1,000 people to attend the concert, but over 500 people would still be more than successful, he stated. He noted that they’re allowed to sell up to 3,000 tickets.

“We have a lot of sponsors for the event, which is pretty much paid for,” Kunes said. “We’re looking to have a safe and fun event. We want to build forward onto next year’s event.”

He stated that there will be food vendors and beverages, including Coke, water, beer and wine.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Purchase tickets online at www.dogwoodmusicfestivalmoultriega.com or in person at the Colquitt County Arts Center. Kunes noted that people should check out the local airways in Tifton for free tickets.

The price to park will be $5 per car. Kunes said Expo staff will be directing parking to make sure that it’s done safely. Off-duty officers and security, as well as Emergency Medical Services, will be on-hand.

For more information, guidelines or directions, visit www.dogwoodmusicfestivalmoultriega.com or contact the Colquitt County Arts Center at 985-1922. Also, check out the Dogwood Music Festival Facebook page.

The Kaleidoscope Museum provides an innovative museum experience for children which inspires curiosity, creativity and imagination. Illustrations of the art history timeline displayed around the museum shows the movement of art from prehistoric to modern times. The jungle nook is a stimulating atmosphere with great reads and comfy seating engulfed in a representation of work by Henri Rousseau. Use today’s technology to journey through the sounds of art history, make art without the mess or create music with an endless selection of instruments. An Indian center houses a tee-pee, noise makers and many tools from Native Americans.

History of the Kaleidoscope Museum

In 1999, the Moultrie Service League created and implemented plans for a Children’s Interactive Art Museum at the Colquitt County Arts Center. The museum was named “Kaleidoscope: A Hand’s on Adventure for Children” and was designed because of a lack of art curriculum in the schools. Service League members worked with the Board of Education to create an art curriculum according to the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum Standards for second graders. By the fall of 2000, every second grader in Colquitt County was scheduled to experience the hands on adventure in art. During their tour, the students painted tiles which continue to hang in the hallway outside the Kaleidoscope Museum. On February 2nd, 2001 the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries (GAMG) presented the award “Museum Special Project of the Year” to the Moultrie Service League for creating the Kaleidoscope Museum.

In 2003, the Service League created and landscaped the sensory garden with a variety of plants designed to appeal to the five senses. Much thought and consideration was put into the planning process to encourage the creative exploration of little minds in nature. When visiting the garden, one will see several natural art forms that are sure to inspire a piece of art of their own. This vicinity of the Arts Center is a wonderful spot to enjoy the tranquility of nature with birds chirping, butterflies flittering and water trickling.

Fall of 2009, the Colquitt County Arts Center welcomed the Sounds of Art History station to the Kaleidoscope Museum. The Sounds of Art History station is an interactive computer program that allows children to explore the history of music through the timelines of art. This hands-on program is displayed on two touch screen computers donated by the United Way. The second graders that visited the Arts Center in 2009 were the first to interact with this new computer program made especially for the museum. The Sounds of Art History was written and narrated by Michael Ryce.

The Moultrie Service League has recently renovated a storage closet adjacent to the Kaleidoscope Museum. This area now includes a handicap accessible bathroom and work space conducive for art classes and birthday parties.
